The Barn at Gibbet Hill
Beth was the first person to write on Nick’s Facebook wall. It wasn’t long after that that she also became his first real girlfriend. What followed was probably a very typical high school relationship – hangouts at lockers in between classes, dates at Panera, awkward holidays with extended family.
Being a grade above, Nick graduated and the young couple decided, like all high school couples where college is in their impending future, that they could make it work. After all, Boston was not that far away. Cell phones were ubiquitous. AIM was loaded up on the computer and baseballbosox52 and fhockeygirlie16 could chat whenever they wanted to.
The end was probably predictable – after dating for most of the following school year, Beth and Nick decided to split up. The fateful night, decided immediately following a kickass Shinedown concert, was a heartbreaker. But hey, Beth was on her way to Wentworth, which is right next to Northeastern. Maybe they’d bump into each other at some point in the city.
Throughout the following eight years they continued with their lives, only bumping into each other a few times in passing. On Nick’s 26th birthday, however, Beth wished him a happy birthday on Facebook. A small thing, no big deal. But then a “hey, it’s been a while, how are you doing?” eventually turned into “hey, thought it would be fun to grab a beer and catch up.”
As the catch-up dinner ran into the night, it became apparent that there was still a spark despite all the years apart. In the time since their last date, they had both graduated college and started their careers in fields they loved, the Red Sox had won the World Series once, and the Patriots had made it to five AFC championship games. Nick had learned to hunt; Beth learned how to like seafood. After a few more “hangouts,” it was like they had never split up in the first place. They never looked back.
On a sunny day in October, Nick convinced Beth to head down to the Arboretum in Boston. They had tickets to game two of the ALCS at Fenway and wanted to spend some time in the city before heading over to the madness of playoff baseball. In his jacket pocket, Nick had the ring that he bought a month before. Walking through a secluded area of the park, Nick called to Beth.
“Uh, I have a question.”
Beth turned around to see Nick on one knee with a box in his hand. After a few tense moments where nobody said anything, she connected the ring to the question; the confusion gave way to joy as she agreed to marry him.
The Red Sox, for their part, won the game that night to solidify the perfect day.
